by all accounts, whiskey disco has matured. each release unique, but compiled meticulously to meet some of the highest standards in the edit community. wd45 continues the trajectory with 4 tracks combining equal parts soul, boogie and disco. rastanils cuts up cheesy obscurity to reveal heavy disco vibes—this edit was smashed by mcde at numerous festivals in 2015. next up, the intriguing corsican brothers reappear after a 5 year absence from whiskey disco with a sliced version of i like it, beefed up bass and space on the platters with a touch of dub. side b exemplifies the weirdness only a b-side can… albions disco chopper is a stretched and phased party jam that does not stop. move to the inside for the lengthy and epic big time, a 9 minute exploration into rocking disco roots, courtesy of the eponymously named blaxploitation movie from 1977.

elliot sindall and oswaldo nicoletti are jäfar, a duo split between paris and london. their first record on fragil musique may be single sided, as so often with the label, but quality is not at stake. marzsia is an amazingly well produced dance trip. the broken drum line is playing around the loop, slightly messing with the heavy feet taping feel. meanwhile, the vocal and instrumental samples subtly come in and out, giving a depth and spirituality to the piece. the record comes with an engravement artwork on its b side and a debut collaboration with louise ernandez photographies for the cover artwork

french label d3 elements returns to chicago for its next ep, this time looking to the assured house talents of hakim murphy for three tracks of raw, dense grooves right from the heart of the windy city. opener boxbeat is a curious, freaky jam with bobbing percussive hits, wonky, pixel thin synth lines and free roaming pads that wrap the whole thing in a nice sense of spaced-out serenity. taste o rainbow has a much more firmly planted kick drum that pounds away uninterrupted below a free flowing brew of modulate synth sounds. it s expertly reduced and masterfully reserved and is sure to send dance floors wild as a result. the flipside cut freshness has pinging drums and a big, frazzled bass line as slithering chords rain down the face. musical yet jacking, cosmic yet propulsive, it is a perfectly contemporary chicago house sound that rounds out a fine ep from one of the best in the game.

ian blevins is the keeper of the jewel in the crown. this is his second offering for the esp institute. picking up right where we left off, side a unleashes another explosive big room belter with resume a driving rhythmic monster that takes advantage of the whips and cracks in ian’s drum machine arsenal, while warm chords lay a foundation for a quirky lead melody and rubbery pulse to dance upon. akin to hannibal, blevins esp institute debut in 2015, the arrangement here toys with us before revealing the true guts of the track—this time characterized halfway through by a punctuating gangster piano hook. on side b, poor old head utilizes ian’s signature drum styling we’ve come to adore, but here he establishes swells of melancholy via bending notes that meow and purr, beautifully ebbing and flowing though an array of incongruous dial tones and bells—shakey and barely out of sync, yet cradling a loosely drawn chord progression. these two songs will smack you up before they rub you down.

back in soviet times when the official local music market was controlled by the biggest record monopoly in history melodiya, many local musicians who wanted to express themselves in actual form, released tapes themselves and spread it through a big underground market network called magnitizdat (short of magnetic tape release). it began in the 60s with soviet rock movement and illegal copies of foreign music which got through border with tourists, seamen and diplomats. in the late 80s you could find there many different shades of music from underground protest rock, post punk, avant-garde to a lot of electronic pop, local kind of italo disco and dj s mixtapes with a personal rap on top of it. plus seven records begins a sublable series of remastered edits which narrate about dance part of this story.

as mood ii swing, production duo lem springsteen and john ciafone became one of the most in-demand remixers in the late 90s. the duo s production career began modestly, however. after a failed attempt at r&b, the two turned to house music. early productions such as sylvano s * helpless* and wall of sound s *critical* were a step in the right direction, as were releases such as -i need a bitch- for cutting and -searchin - for groove on, but it was the duo s remixes of ultra naté s * free* for strictly rhythm that struck gold. the song became a huge hit and soon mood ii swing was remixing big-name producers like bt (-remember-) and king britt (* the reason*) as well as the next ultra naté single, * found a cure*, which also became a huge hit record around the world. then, as a testament to the duos success, the new york-based nervous have dug up the remixes mood ii swing did for the label during their seminal mid 90s period re mastered and re released on wax for 2016.

*dubble attack* is the ultimate deejay selection for producer legend glen brown including u roys king tubby sound system special *number one in the world*, big youths instant rewind *opportunity rock*, three of i roys hardest and hardest to get tunes along with a trio of killers from prince jazzbo and many more, released in 1972 to 1974 on glen browns jamaican label pantomime. in total 14 tracks of highly desirable recordings from the most collectable label of them all, engineered by king tubby. remastered with expanded sleeve notes *dubble attack* is the must have deejay round-up no serious reggae fan can be without. available as cd (digipak) and lp-vinyl with new lacquers cut by kevin metcalfe at soundmasters.

washerman strikes back with 4 versatile tracks and is showing us another side of his brilliant work. after probably almost a hundred of releases and remixes under monikers like sequel or azuni, he gained himself a big reputation as washerman. he founded his own label deep down slam and released also for different labels such as kerri chandler s madhouse to name only one
